Gray Comma?

I followed this butterfly around my cousin's yard trying to get a good picture of it. While this is not the greatest shot (I would have liked a more close up shot), it is still a nice image. I love how the butterfly stands out among all of the greenery around it. So, I decided to be resourceful and try to identify the butterfly myself. Brain stimulation overload - there are way more butterflies than I thought, not to count all of the moths. So as I was looking I thought I found it but thought hey I should double check some of the others to see if I might be missing something. Remember to write down what you think it might be before you do this. By the time I concluded I was right, ummm... well I forgot what I thought it was in the first place. So... off I went trying to narrow the choices down again. This time remembering to write down the ones that were contenders. So I think I have it figured out a Gray Comma Butterfly. The only other possible one that I thought it might be was a Compton Tortoiseshell Butterfly but it is missing the white spots. I am 99.9% sure that it is definitely a Gray Comma butterfly. I could not find a single image of a moth that looked remotely like this particular one. I do have to say that there are some really beautiful moths out there though. And some of the ones that are butterflies, I would have mistaken for moths. Anyhow that is another issue. If I have identified this butterfly wrong please don't hesitate to let me know. I am trying to be accurate. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Definitely a butterfly, not a moth, and I believe it is a comma. I used to be good at this. Getting old and forgetful. They sure do move fast, don't they?

Nice composition in the shot! Your patience paid off.

I know a few weeks ago I tried to identify a moth photo I had taken -who knew there were so many.
I hope someone can help you identify it for sure.

I love the way you wrote this.
Don't ask me about names though, I have no idea what butterflys or plants are called.

Christy: Those butterflies are so hard to capture if they don't want you to.

Beautiful image! What an interesting name for a butterfly - it does look as if there are little commas on his wings. As far as I know, that's one we don't have here.

Beautiful photo. You made me laugh about how you forgot what you originally thought it was after you looked through all the others - that's EXACTLY what I've been known to do too hehe.

It looks like a comma to me! I think butterfly identification is so much fun and I learn as I go. And, yes, I agree, moths can be beautiful too.

In the northern hemisphere this season this butterflies give birth on the green leaves, leave a egg almost in each leaf and from them will live certain.
This makes also her butterfly your photograph.
Above right in a leaf, appears clean her egg!
Congratulation for your marvelus blog!

I love how the butterfly adds the spark of color to the greenery!

The British Comma is similar but the wings are more 'frilled'. There are white comma markings on the underside of the wings.
Whatever, it's a nice picture and you know you had fun researching.

Nice capture! Butterflies can be difficult to photograph can't they? I chase them around and just as I get them in focus ... they fly off!

Thanks for your visit!

Butterflies have the most interesting names! I've seen a picture of another called a "Question Mark." What's with the punctuation?

Nice pictures, by the way!
