Double Rainbow

This is an image that I merged together to get the full rainbow. On the right side you can see a faint double rainbow. This was such a weird day. I left the store and saw the double rainbow. I stopped took pictures then moved to a better location for shots. My cousin, who was with me, and I watched the rainbows fade. We started to head home and BAM! the rainbows appeared again. I frantically tried to figure out where I could safely pull off the road and take more pictures. Found a place and the image above is the result from this little endeavor. And to think I almost waited to go to the store at a later date.

Info from Wiki about double rainbows:

"In a double rainbow, a second arc may be seen above and outside the primary arc, and has the order of its colours reversed (red faces inward toward the other rainbow, in both rainbows). This second rainbow is caused by light reflecting twice inside water droplets. The region between a double rainbow is dark, and is known as "Alexander's band" or "Alexander's dark band". The reason for this dark band is that, while light below the primary rainbow comes from droplet reflection, and light above the upper (secondary) rainbow also comes from droplet reflection, there is no mechanism for the region between a double rainbow to show any light reflected from water drops."

For our family vacation this summer, we took a small tour of North Western Michigan. In three days, we enjoyed visiting 5 of the many lighthouses found in MI. Above are three of my favorite images that I took.

We took the boys to see all the antique fire trucks on display Saturday in Frankenmuth.

The boys loved it, as did my hubby and I. We walked around and then had a picnic lunch; it was such a nice relaxed day, despite the heat.

Bleeding Heart

We took one of my nieces and a nephew with us to the zoo the other day. The flowers were really starting to bloom. I don't know why I'm always drawn to this flower but it is among my favorites.

The past two weeks this image seems to be very fitting of. We have been put through the emotional rollercoaster. On June 14th we celebrated the graduation of my niece from high school. June 15th brought sorrow to the family with the passing of my husbands grandmother, she was 89. June 17th, I had a fun photo shoot with the kids in the mud. Later that evening, I learned of the passing of a dear family friend, she was 82. June 19th we had a graduation open house for my niece. The 20th and 21st were spent at the funeral home for Grandma. The funeral was on the 21st. I didn't have much time to rest as I had to get shopping done for a family reunion with my mom's family that took place this past Saturday. In the meantime between shopping trips I learned of two high school friends who both lost their mothers this past week. Saturday was an enjoyable day with the family. Sunday I suffered from a terrible migraine. Today I had a wonderful 9month old to shoot pictures of followed by the funeral for our family friend. So needless to say, I am really hoping and praying for a peaceful few days to get caught up on the things I have to do and maybe work on a few things that I'd like to do.

Frankenmuth Hot Air Balloon Festival - Friday

Memorial Weekend we went up to Frankenmuth to see the Hot Air Balloon Races and to see the Glows. I am so glad we went Friday. We were able to catch one race (the only race out of seven that was able to be completed.) This was also the only night that they had a full glow in the evening.

Such a fun day and we went back Saturday and Sunday. These days were not as exciting but still a lot of fun. Looking forward to next year's festival.

March's Super Moon

Here it is rising over the horizon and trees.

While killing time between shots, I noticed the reflection of the bus garage in my side view mirror and thought why not so I took a pic. I was sitting in the parking lot of my local high school taking images.

I made my first attempt at astrophotography. Not bad for a first attempt, I'm hoping to do more when the weather is warmer.

And finally, an image of the Super Moon.

I was a little disappointed. I had built it up in my mind with all the media coverage and all. It really didn't appear all that different to me but I'm still glad I shot the images no matter what as it allowed more practice in Manual mode.

Almost a Month

Wow I know I've slowed down on my posting but usually no more than a week or two between posts. I have definitely hit a busy season in my life and this past month has been full of the not so ordinary events. We have been to several doctors appointments for my youngest, I just recently finished serving as a juror on a murder trial, and have been babysitting a, now, six month old for the past couple of months, on top of the normal mothering/housewife duties. Oh and I've been trying to get my photography business going as well. Now that the weather is starting to be nicer outside, I'm hoping to get out more and shoot some pics.

So all of the snow has pretty much melted around here. The big news is that we are supposed to be getting 4-8 inches by 8am Monday. I am so ready for spring. I want to be able to go for long walks again. I love the snow but I'm ready to be done until next winter. Let's hope the SPRING really is only another 28 days away.

"God Gave Us the World" Book Review

God Gave Us the World is very cute and a quick read for bedtime or other times. It is a great way to introduce your children to other cultures. I know many families who focus on specific countries and the missionaries they know in those countries as way of studying those countries. This is a great way to help with introducing this concept to the elementary aged student. I did receive a complimentary copy of the book from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers for review purposes.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth, MI. It was so fun walking around looking at all of the competitive sculptures. The only problem was that it was super overcast that day. So, I convinced my husband to go back a few days later, the day after a "blizzard" hit the area to be precise, when the sun was shining and just gorgeous outside.

"Radical" Book Review

I recently finished reading the book “Radical” by David Platt, a complimentary book that was provided to me by Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers for review purposes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was thought provoking as well as spiritually convicting. While I would have liked to have seen a few more scripture references listed within the reading, the book is scripturally sound and something every one of us needs to think about and act upon. My views have changed immensely and still I have a long way to go in changing my thoughts and actions in order to truly fulfill the request of Christ in my life. In the book, we are reminded that “the gospel is the revelation of who God is, who we are, and how we can be reconciled to him.” (28) This really hit home. While I knew mentally that we are to be reconciled to God, reconciliation to God is not how I always live my life. I realize that all too often I am trying to make God fit into my mold instead of trying to make myself fit into God’s mold. Platt also states that the “Biblical proclamation of the gospel…demands and enables us to turn from our sin, to take up our cross, to die to ourselves, and to follow Jesus…Jesus is no longer one to be accepted or invited in but one who is infinitely worthy of our immediate and total surrender.” (39) Oh how this statement rang true in my ears. We need to surrender our lives to Jesus and live for Him. Mere acceptance just simply isn’t enough. It is this “total surrender” that He needs from us. Granted it is not easy to surrender and something each of us do daily and most often fail miserably daily but the key is in surrendering daily. Platt has given an excellent challenge to today’s church. I would completely recommend this book to others and have actually already referred to ideas found in the book in my everyday conversations.

On Injured Wings

It isn't very often that one gets to see an Eagle from above, but when you do make sure you take advantage of it. I love the set up of this exhibit at the Saginaw Zoo even more so now since seeing this Eagle at the bottom. And when he spread his injured wings to climb back up, man was I ever excited. I realize these are captive birds but they also would not survive without the help of the zoos that house them. I love my zoos and will have a membership for years to come (remember I have toddlers). I enjoy seeing all of the animals and am thankful that my zoos are AZA certified. Have a wonderful day.

The Pere Marquette 1225 is a famous Engine. You can see it featured in the Film - "The Polar Express". Okay so it is actually the proto-type for the Engine in the film but still how cool is that?

I am finally starting to find a routine that works for me but I know this will change, I have toddler boys but they will be in school soon enough and I will have lots of time on my hands, so for now I am enjoying the time that I have with them and that is another reason why I have been so infrequent with my postings. Great Blue Heron Wishes

So I'm looking back through my posts and came across this one from about a year ago. Well my dream/wish from that post has come true. The following images are straight out of the camera only a little cropping so that you can see the Great Blue Heron more readily. I am so excited about this sighting and love that I captured his catch on "film." While these images are from a recent zoo trip, the Heron is in an open pond and is indeed a bird of the wild. Enjoy the images, I know I do.

A Dream Vacation

I fell in love with the city of Petoskey here in Michigan. This is one of the scenes that sealed the deal of this love. Although I have only been to visit the area twice. I typically use my vacation time to visit family and since I have no family near by it has to be an excursion trip. This image is from my first visit and it pre-dates my conversion to digital. I long to visit again with my digital camera. Also in case you are wondering the building depcicted here is The Inn at Bay Harbor - A Renaissance Golf Resort. I would love to stay here the next time I visit, being right on the water would be awesome.

This was the view I had looking east out my front door. The wooded lot behind my home is what I will miss most about my old home. I still get to look out my front door to see gorgeous sunsets though. I had started a series of images that I had entitled "Out My Front Door" mostly of sunset images. My only problem is that they are all on film and most of them still need developing. I so need to get my film developed. I think, now that my vehicle is paid off, I need to start taking a few rolls in each month until I have them all developed. Does anyone have any recommendations on whether I should use some place local or should I use one of the mail services? I don't know.

These images are from fall of 2008. They are from a side-trip that I took on a trip across state to St. Joe. They are from the Augusta Covered Bridge area. The first picture I have posted other similar images. I love this picture in particular - the trail disappearing into the woods, the gorgeous golden color of the leaves, it is just too inviting I can't stand it. I'm ready for the walk now, only I live almost two hours away. Go HERE to read about this trip. I need to visit there again soon.

I think I want to try and capture MI (that should be read "my", get it a play on words) covered bridges during other seasons as well as the fall. (I was looking through my bridge pictures and noted that they are all from the fall season.) This will be a project that lasts a few years because well, I don't have the free time like I once had when I started this project back in 2005. I've had two of the best gifts bestowed upon me and have been loving every minute of it, although at this season in my life I don't have the time I once had and have to do much more planning in order to have free time but this will change over time.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. They are of my favorite season. The only thing I don't like about the fall is the reminder that colder weather is ahead. I've always said if they could give me 80 degree weather and snow I wouldn't mind winter because I love love love the beauty of snow but hate hate hate the cold.

Bee Hunting Again

I honestly enjoy the difficulty in trying to photograph a bee. They rarely hold still long enough to do this hence the thrill of the final image. I am hoping to get some more closer images this coming year.

I am hoping to have my internet back at home soon and to catch up with my blogs that I like so well. We had decided that since we had planned to be on vacation the last part of July and had big plans the first two weekends that we would cut the expense. Well things didn't go quite as planned and we didn't end up leaving the last of July, and knowing this at the beginning of the month we opted to still turn off the internet for the month. We should be back up mid-August when our billing cycle begins. Know that I am missing my daily reading and am looking forward to catching up with you all very soon.

A trip to another zoo. To warn you I have a lot and I mean a. lot. of pictures from zoos. We've already been to three different zoos already this summer and been a total of six times to the zoo and have plans for more visits. We have definitely put our zoo membership to good use and have really made it worth every penny. It has paid for itself three times over now, so definitely worth the cost. And with a 2.5 and 1.5 year old animals are always a good thing to go and see.

I followed this goldfinch for a bit and knew where he landed. It wasn't until after I pulled the image up on the computer that I realized how well he blended and looked just like the other dandelions on the ground. So do you see him?

My bargain flowers that we bought the other day. We splurged and bought cut flowers, two half dozen bundles for $1.49 a piece. They were so pretty, I couldn't resist. And for $3.00 I was able to beautify my home for a brief time period. I still look at the grocery store every now and then to see if there are any more bargains like this to be found.

My first sighting of a Baltimore Oriole and I got him captured in pictures. I followed this guy around the tree for a good fifteen minutes. I loved the contrast of the orange with the light pink blossoms.

So the other day, well Mother's Day to be exact, we were walking through the preserve and I'm admiring the beautiful color of this tree's blossoms. What would I see land in the tree? None other than a gorgeous Blue Jay who looks even more striking in the tree. Sure enough I get the camera aimed at him and focused and just before I can snap the picture...

Funny story about this picture. I was standing there taking pictures of this goose not making much of myself just standing there shooting pictures. As I put my camera down, it is just in time to see the male goose comes flying straight at me. I barely have time to move out of the way. So now my heart is racing a bit. As I turn to see where the goose is headed, I see another goose trying to move in on the obvious territory that has been established. It was a rather exciting moment when he came flying at me, just glad that I wasn't really his target and that I was just in the path to his target. I do my best not to disturb nature. I love to capture nature on film or rather digital file now but not at the expense of hurting or disturbing things in order to do so. What is your most heart racing moment in your adventures of photography?

My favorite shots of a Great Blue Heron. So far this is the best I have. I keep hoping to get a better shot of one. Sad thing is I only realized a few years ago that they were even in MI. To be honest growing up, I didn't see many birds besides Robins, Mourning Doves, Mallard Ducks, Canada Geese, and the occasional Blue Jay or Cardinal. I'm amazed that I have the love and desire to explore nature that I do. I need to do it more often but I will plan trips around nature centers and parks that I might be able to visit. Hope you enjoy today's photos.

I love to see trees survive despite being hollowed out. It always reminds me of Pooh and Piglet's home when I see trees like this. Yeah I know, I'm a softy, most people would probably think of other things but Pooh and Piglet it is for me.

I'm Back

I am back up and running. I have quite a few pictures to share. I have been taking pictures when I have had the opportunity but have only just had time to sort through and edit and get the ones I like ready for everyone to see. So some of these images are from the beginning of spring. I hope to post more regularly now that the extra events in my life have slowed down. Here's hoping.
